Waratah - filling ballast tanks at sea 'dangerous'.
The Sydney Morning Herald, Saturday 17 December, 1910. 'Commander Lyon suggested that if thetanks of the vessel were filled during avery heavy swell such as they got in thatpart of the world where she was last seenit would be very dangerous.' Taking into account Captain Ilbery's 30 years of experience at sea (including off the South African coast), it is unlikely that such an operation would have been undertaken. Also, there would be no reason for filling tanks at sea. The Waratah was deeply loaded and ballasted, with a draught of almost 29 feet when she departed Durban.
