Waratah - Lighthouse keepers, Cape Hermes.

The Senior Lighthouse keeper at Cape Hermes, 1909, was GJ Reynolds and Lighthouse keeper 1 was J Piper. Two keepers were expected to attend a number of duties as well as keep a lookout to sea. On a winter's night, with numerous bush fires on shore causing diminished visibility, and a steamer in trouble on the far left extremity of peripheral vision, it is not surprising that the 'large burning steamer' might have escaped notice.
