DANGEROUS PRACTICE OF FILLING BALLAST TANKS AT SEA.
THE WARATAH ENQUIRY.
PROFESSOR BRAGG'S EVIDENCE.
He discussed the stability of the Waratah with the engineer who reassured witness very much, saying that the Waratah was 'as safe as achurch.' Witness became convinced thatthe vessel had an almost neutral equilibrium. He asked the engineer whetherin rough weather the tanks would he filled, and the engineer said that they wouldand that the vessel would then be as stiffas a board. Perhaps the engineer was indulging Prof. Bragg by suggesting that Waratah's ballast tanks could be filled during rough weather - variable free water effect on shifting centre of gravity. If not, this was a dangerous practice and surely not undertaken to satisfy nervous passengers??
