Waratah - 12 000 tons of heavy cargo.

THE LOST WARATAH.
BOARD OF TRADE INQUIRY.
EVIDENCE AS TO STABILITY.
LONDON, Dec 15.

Sir. Barry, chief of the scientific depart-ment of Messrs. Barclay and Curle, thebuilders of the Waratah, testified that theowners wanted a vessel capable of going tosea with coal and water ballast only. Thiswas found impossible!. They required, also a carrying capacity for 12,000 tons ofheavy cargo. The inclining experimentswhen the Waratah was launched weresatisfactory. There was no change in herdisplacement during her construction, shewas of the ordinary type, and she was innowise an experimental vessel.
In her short career Waratah was never loaded to 12 000 tons. One wonders why as one wonders about the use of the words 'ordinary type'. She was not - she was a departure from the 'ordinary type'.
