DOUBTS ABOUT THE LIFEBUOY.

Goulburn Evening Penny Post, 30 December, 1911.

THE LOST WARATAH.
Aunkland (N.Z.), Thursday - Shipping men
doubt that the lifebuoy picked up is part of the
wreckage of the steamer Waratah. They say if
it bore that name it probably belonged to the
scow Whangaroa, which was abandoned near
Lord Howe Island about a year ago.

This extract is bizarre. The lifebuoy recovered was marked 'Waratah', not 'Whangaroa'.

It is strange that denial was still so prevalent by the end of 1911.

“Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul
And sings the tune without the words
And never stops at all.”
― Emily Dickinson
